Colleen and Brian - Engagement Session

I met with Colleen and Brian for their engagement session on Sunday. This engagement session had a little twist, however! I had always wondered what it would be like to photograph a bridal party when they weren't dressed to the nines. I asked Colleen to bring her bridal party along, in their "comfortable" clothes. We took a few shots. I had a few ideas -- some that will take me some time to complete, but when it's done, I'll share!

We went to the Flats in Cleveland. Note to self: don't always assume nothing's going on in the Flats. There was a concert there, so the parking lot was packed! It's unfortunate, because I really had a vision for the bridal party against the Flatsopoly wall. When you get lemons - just make lemonade -- I incorporated the cars as props in this photo:

The sun was strong -- so we played with it a little...

The following isn't "photoshop gone wild" -- it's part of a Twilight emulation that I plan on creating with the entire bridal party -- this is step one.

Now for the engagement session -- Colleen and Brian were such an easygoing couple -- I'm looking forward to photographing their wedding!

Olmsted Falls - Rain or Shine

This has been such a rainy weather year for Northeast Ohio. Finding a location "in case of rain" can be a challenge, especially if you don't what to pay high prices for a just-in-case. There aren't many free places in the west suburbs of Cleveland (or anywhere else, for that matter!).

I took a look at what I could find in the city of Olmsted Falls that would fulfill two requirements -- outdoors so that we could still photograph green, lush, beautiful locations, but also that offered cover in case of rain. Listed below are photos of four great locations in Olmsted Falls, within a minute or two driving distance away from each area, that could be used for photographing in rain or shine. A phone call to the Olmsted Falls City Hall confirmed that permits are not required, fees are not assessed at any park location. That said, reservations cannot be made to hold any pavilion.

Village Green Park

This is a great little park - I confess, I've never really stopped here to see what that little white building was until I came specifically to check it out for rainy day photo opportunities. The little white building is a public pavilion. I have to say that I've never seen anyone here, and after seeing it, I wonder why? There are some great backdrops for stunning photos. It could be that it's a stone's throw from the more popular Fortier Park/Grand Pacific Junction area.

There is also a very lovely gazebo - everything is located right off the side of the road, parking immediately adjacent to the park along the street.

Rain or shine, this would make a nice photo, either near the entryway of the pavilion (rain), or along the bricked pathway during nicer weather.

A shorter view of the inside - believe it or not, picnic tables can be used in creative portrait options! If you don't like the look of wood picnic tables, you might consider putting a couple table covers in your rainy day bag.

If your thirsty....

If the weather is nice, and you have planned a lot of time between ceremony and reception -- annnnnd your a basketball fan, you might have a little fun on the basketball court.

The photographer is always looking for some nice backdrops for portraits. There is a lovely weathered fence just behind the pavilion that would make an excellent backdrop.

East River Park

Another park that I haven't really ventured into - and it's just "around the block" from Fortier Park. This covered pavilion is right off the parking lot, as you can see pictured below. This pavilion would enable you to capture the green of outdoors while being completely covered.

A closer view of the pavilion shows a very appealing arched bracing that would be a perfect "frame" for a bridal party portrait.

If the weather cooperates, there is this open space of lush green grass with a winding pathway, a lamp post, tree and some benches. All would be wonderful photo presentations.

Just to the side of the pavilion (within a few steps) is this hosta area, providing another lush green spot for photos.

If the weather is clear, but the grounds are wet, here is a beautiful wooden fence with forest backdrop - setting up the bride/groom and bridal party on the sidewalk would keep shoes nice and clean.

Fortier Park

Oh the beautiful Fortier Park - otherwise known as Wedding Day Grand Central Station. If the weather is nice, expect to spend a little extra time. There will no doubt be a half dozen other wedding parties there at the same time. For good reason. There are so many places to take great photos - and most especially at the waterfall area. In case of rain, there is a pavilion just a short distance from the parking lot - along a tarred paved pathway leading to it. There will be a few feet of grassy area you will need to cross to get to the pavilion. I suggest bringing another pair of shoes if the grass is wet, and then changing back into your formal shoes once inside the pavilion.

This photo is right off the parking lot -- great for a day where there might be a drizzle, but bearable enough to get out of your vehicle for this great backdrop.

The pavilion is made with varying shades of stone and quite beautiful to photograph.

Even the bathroom is made of stone. I've taken quite a few photos along the side of this structure because it makes a gorgeous backdrop.

Some examples from past sessions around the pavilion area:

Just a short distance is this fabulous waterfall -- be forewarned, though, that to get to the waterfall, you need to descend down some stone steps that are not even. They aren't steep, but they also aren't predictably spaces, so caution is necessary. There is also some footwork needed to get to the "photographing" area by the falls -- you will most likely want to wear shoes that you feel comfortable in.

And, the beautiful covered bridge. This can be used for both rain and shine. The inside is built with gorgeous wooden beams. The opening is wide enough to frame a large wedding party. Also, by placing the bride or groom within the beam slats, you can capture nice close ups that make it appear as if they are outdoors with beautiful green backdrop.

Grand Pacific Junction Shopping District

Finally, the Grand Pacific Junction Shopping area. This is adjacent to Fortier Park. A quait little downtown area filled with unique stores, outdoor seating, and lovely extras, such as a covered wagon, and a train located next to a truly gorgeous gazebo. The gazebo is not a part of the Olmsted Falls park district, is privately owned, and DOES requires a fee and reservation. However, I spoke with the owner, and the $75.00 fee that is charged is donated to charity. I've posted the contact information. You will need to provide the date and time you plan to use the gazebo, as well as how many people in your party.

Emily and Cory Get Married! 5/28/11

I had the true pleasure of photographing Emily and Cory's wedding last Saturday. It was nice to finally get to work with them, since they booked me over a year and a half ago! Emily and I have been friends on Facebook since she booked me, so it seems as if I know her so well -- one of the bonuses of social media, for sure!

What a gorgeous day! They were married at beautiful Our Lady of Angels Church in Rocky River, coincidentally by the very priest who married my husband and me nearly 28 years ago, and baptized all of our children! The weather cooperated -- warm and breezy.

I'm putting this on record as saying that this bridal party and guests are the most energetic dancers I've ever photographed! What a crazy fun bunch! Here are some photos of the day:

The bride and her bridesmaids met at Emily's Petite Salon in Tremont - great place - I love the open floor plan of this place! It made it so easy for the girls to chat.

Kevin and Christine Get Married! May 7, 2011

I had such a wonderful experience at Christine and Kevin's wedding on May 7th! They were married at St. Clarence Church in North Olmsted (my parish!), and though the schedule was tight, we managed to get some awesome photos at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Reception was at Ridge Park Manor. I really enjoyed getting to know their family and friends as well! I got a big kick out of the bridal party frolics -- they were such a fun group!

Carmen and Thom Get Married! April 29, 2011

I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing Carmen and Thom's wedding this past Saturday. What a beautiful couple, and such a warm and loving family! Northeast Ohio suffered the rainiest April on record this year, and although the weather could have gone either way by the looks of the clouds, the rain held off, thank goodness! Here are some of the photos of their day:

(She's the one snapping away on her camera). She is a wonderful person and a great help in gathering the family for formal photos!

The ceremony and formal photos ran long, so by the time we arrived at the Sheraton Suites in Akron/Cuyahoga Falls, it was, according to the timeline, already to leave. We took 20 minutes to capture the "between ceremony and reception" shots. The gorgeous view made it easy. I've never been to the Sheraton for photos before, but I will certainly go back if given the opportunity. Not only do I love the falls and the rushing water, the reflection off the glass building added an interesting impact.

Carmen's sister held it together for most of her toast...all but for a moment...and here it is...

I absolutely love caketops - each caketop seems to give you an idea of the synergy of the bride and groom. This captures Carmen and Thom perfectly - happy, playful and very much in love...

Apparently Carmen and her siblings break out in dance a lot! :-) They did a special fun dance and now that Thom is part of the family, he joined in!

Quishauna - High School Senior Portrait

What a gorgeous girl -- I had a great time (even if it was beyond chilly!). By the way, between shots, Keneshia was so cold her teeth were literally chattering. You'd never know it though - she turned it on for the camera!

Barb and Brian Get Married! March 5, 2011

2010 in Review - Part Two

The second half of 2010 was very busy and very eventful in my personal life as well. My daughter gave birth to beautiful Ava Belle and my son graduated from Case Western Reserve University. Those middle months of the year in Ohio are why it's so worth living here -- the bright greens of late spring, the long days of summer and autumn's display of colorful leaves which hung on longer than usual this year.

Again, I'll choose just one photo from each event and portrait session -- it was tough to decide on just one photo -- but the one I chose has meaning to me...

July 2010

Jen and Scott's Engagement Session (aka our excellent adventure!). Again, it was so hard to choose just one -- I had gorgeous sunset photos, lovely lake reflections and lots of easy going natural laughter. I chose this one because Jen saw a photo like this somewhere else and she was hoping I could emulate it. I love it when a bride-to-be shares ideas with me! This was the last photo of the day -- I laid flat on the sand to get this shot, while Jen and Scott lay on the other side where the depth of field would blur to a nice creamy bokeh. I loved it as did they -- and I'm thankful for the suggestion - it has become one of my favorite engagement ring shots!

Of all the photos of Rachel and Brandon's wedding - this one resonates with me the most. Why? Because their wedding day survived many mishaps - a bridal bouquet that was overchilled and sorta dead brown in spots, a thunderstorm in the middle of their outdoor vineyard wedding, a tornado just before the reception, a reception hall with only enough power to light up a string of Christmas lights and the DJ - no airconditioning in mid 90 humid heat, no sit down dinner (it had to become a buffet), and more. I was amazed that even though 1/10th of that would be enough to rattle any bride and groom -- Rachel and Brandon let it all roll -- they laughed it off. They embraced the true meaning of this day, as did their guests. No one left. In fact, they carried the party over to another location once their time was up at the reception hall. This photo reminds me that it's not what does or does not happen at a wedding that "makes" the wedding. It's how you choose to react to it. Their wedding was one of the most challenging and most rewarding I've had the privilege to photograph.

Amanda and George got married! They had a beautiful outdoor ceremony at Puska's Outdoor Party Center in Lorain. This was another difficult choice - I remember George asking me to take a picture of their rings on their fingers -- it struck me that he was the one that asked -- so proud he was to have married this wonderful lady. The picture I chose, however, was of Amanda. Amanda had crazy beautiful eyes.

Ava Belle is born! My beautiful first grandchild. She has gotten so used to having a camera pointed at her that a photo session is just another aspect of spending time with Grandma.
August 2010

Vanessa's Senior Portrait. Vanessa has many interests - two of which were her horse and her music. For this portrait I blended a photo of her playing her guitar onto a music book that she brought with her.

Bethany and Ed's Engagement Session. I'm looking forward to Bethany and Ed's August 2011 wedding in Columbus. We photographed their engagement session at the Franklin Conservatory (also in Columbus). What a gorgeous place - fitting for this gorgeous couple. This photo -- I love the natural expression of love on both their faces and I absolutely love the way the wind swept Bethany's hair across her face.
Melissa and Dale get married! Actually, she was a client that I "lost." Over the months, as my Facebook friend, I had gotten to know her better through her status updates and often laughed at some of her quirkier posts, as well as "awwwwwed" over her very sweet posts about her love for Dale and her children. She had gotten to know me as well. She commented often on my updates, which I really appreciated. it was nice to know that even though she wasn't a client, she was becoming a friend. I was honored to be able to attend her wedding as a guest. And of course I brought my camera :-) Because of our Facebook connection, I knew that her dad meant the world to her and they had recently experienced some circumstances that made his walk down the aisle with her extra special. I think the look on his face says it all.

Rachel and Brandon -- again! Rachel and Brandon - the couple from the crazy tornado wedding. I knew that in the year up to their wedding day that Rachel had meticulously planned her wedding down to the smallest detail. I also know that she had her heart set on vineyard photos (their ceremony was at a vineyard in Lake Chautauqua, NY and thwarted by a thunderstorm midway through). I was so moved by how well they cheerfully dealt with all the mishaps on that day, that I wrote to Rachel while she was on her honeymoon and offered her a free Ohio vineyard portrait session. We had fun and they got their vineyard pictures.

Ashley and Justin got married! One of the nicest people and families I've ever met with so much symbolism woven throughout the wedding day. Butterflies and horseshoes, Irish songs, bagpipes. And so much love. They were married at Milan Villa, lined with these incredible willow trees, which were gorgeous, but I chose this portrait from .our session at Vermilion Beach when the sun was at an angle that caught the beach and lit Ashley's face so beautifully. I couldn't choose which to post - especially since there were such strong "moment" shots as well. So you get both.

Judy and Mark's Family Portrait Session. I met Judy and Mark when I photographed their June 2009 wedding. They added a member to their family since I last saw them -- and asked me to take a family photo. It was really nice to see them again -- and I'm so glad they contacted me. I love to reconnect with the people I've met and worked with.

Heather and Brian -- I love love love this portrait. One of my favorites of the year. First of all -- Heather and Brian are the most sincere and down to earth people on the planet. As far as the portrait goes, when we arrived at Huntington Beach, I had the thought of what I wanted in mind, but in reality, we had a 30-minute time frame that landed perfectly at sunset, with the wind blowing just right...the wind, the sunset and the beautiful lines of Heather's body/dress... I think I sighed out loud when I saw this in my viewfinder :-)

Delmont's Senior Portrait. This guy could be a Hollister model. Hollister markets their company as "laid back and effortlessly cool." That's Delmont.

Nicole, David, Aleah and Mayah. Remember Mayah - my first newborn picture at the beginning of the year? This is the rest of the family :-) This photo is one of the "outakes." I love love love the way David and Mayah are interacting. It's a cute moment leading up to the next shot.
November 2010

Jen, Mike, Kate and Anna -- another beautiful family. I also love Wade Oval Pond in University Heights. Gorgeous in spring - spectacular in autumn. I really wanted to capture a family blended in the midst of a "landscape" photo. This was the perfect day for that.

Kait - Senior Portrait Session. In mid November we still had plenty of gorgeous autumn and the weather was unseasonably mild. I enjoyed my session with Kait at Shoepfle Gardens. This pose reminds me of a throwback to 50's Hollywood. I love the look of quiet confidence in her eyes with just a hint of a smile.

November 2010

Les and Jessica got married! I say I love each and every couple that I've worked with -- and it's true. Jessica and Les are no exception. They are both very laid back, friendly and gracious and I remember their wedding "flavor" as being a wonderful celebration among close friends. I fell in love with this photo as soon as I saw it on my camera....the lines of the stairs and railing...and her beautiful graceful and elegant stance.

Tony, Karmyce, Kyndall and Kennedy - Family Portrait Session. Karmyce called me to do another Christmas portrait for her family (I photographed them in 2009 and Kyndall's "Princess and the Frog" session in the spring). We met at Tower City. At the beginning of our session I thought it would be really cool to get a photo of the children outside looking into the "Halle Building" windows. As a lifetime Clevelander, I appreciate the historical significance of the "old downtown." I only wish Mr. Jingaling was still around!

December 2010

James turned one! Jennifer, one of my 2011 brides, bought a portrait session as a gift for her sister (what a thoughtful gift, I might add!). I love the pensive look on James' face in this photo. It really looks like he's taking it all in, doesn't it? He was a sweetheart and I really enjoyed spending time with him, his mom and his aunt!

And we're done! I am thankful and appreciate the friends I have made this past year. I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. And I look forward to more friendships and more opportunities to capture "moments" in 2011.

2010 in Review -- Part One

I meant to create this blog at the end of December, but time just got away from me -- I spent some very meaningful moments with my family over the holidays and decided that this could wait just a couple weeks.

2010 was a blessing. I had wonderful opportunities to meet and work with many new couples, families and friends. I cherished each and every wedding that I photographed - and feel bonded in special and unique ways to each couple that I've had the privilege to work with - either through engagement sessions or by spending the day with them at their weddings.

I've also enjoyed spending time with the families that I've photographed. After a family session I always feel honored to shared a little slice of their life and to capture their special moments in time.

This was my second full year of business - after years of photographing for personal fulfillment. When I began, I admit I was hesitant - afraid that taking money for doing something that I love might somehow "taint" my feelings about photography. I'm happy to say that my passion has only increased. It really isn't about the hype or marketing or making money. Trust me on this. I don't advertise and I don't market myself the way I probably should. I've been lucky, though. I've worked with some incredible people who refer me to their friends, who refer me to their friends, and so on.

So what is it about the business end of photography that intrigues me? It's about the quest to capture "a moment." It's what I live for. If I'm working with someone, I have that opportunity. I'll admit that I'm hard on myself. Ask my family. And thank God for my family. I see everything I want to do better. They see everything that I've accomplished. They are a wonderful support system. I continue to quest for the moments and am thankful for opportunities that I've had in 2010 and look forward to many more in 2011.

Now for the recap - it was very very hard to choose just one photo from each event - the photos that I chose are meaningful to me in ways that I will describe...

January 2010 was no off season month for me - I photographed three weddings!

Janelle and Kevin - what is so unique about this photo is that Janelle and Kevin kissed for a solid 30 seconds in the freezing cold (kudos to them!), which is how long it took in order to capture this natural light photo of them after dark.

Beautiful Holly, with her classic elegance and soulful eyes. Her mom made this beautiful cape so that Holly would look beautiful while staying warm during their photos in the snow.

This is a "moment." It's not just that Katie cries during the father/daughter dance. It's the look on her father's face as well -- it feels like love, pride and protectiveness to me.

February, 2010

My cousin, Donnie. He's a fantastic musician! This photo is what he chose for the cover of his CD. I loved this session and I loved spending time with one of my favorite people!

Michele and Nick's Engagement Session. It's really hard to find a place to take pictures when it's cold, gray and snowy. Nick managed to turn a "no" from the Botanical Gardens into a "yes" for this session. After spending time with them, I could see why -- he was a down to earth, charming guy. This photo tells me that Michele thinks he is too :-)

March 2010

I had a great time photographing Susan, who was competing in a fitness contest. She worked hard and placed in several categories. The inspiration for the following pose, believe it or not, was Britney Spear's "Womanizer" -- if you're looking -- it was at 2:04 into the video. Very beautiful - very feminine. It was when I saw the lift in the curve at the small of her back, that I knew that if I had the opportunity, I would get a shot like that.

April 2010

Sarah and Kevin's Engagement Session. Not only do I love the smile on Sarah's face, but I also loved the placement of her feet and the way she so comfortably leaned into Kevin. It was great moment to capture! I also love the fact that it was early April in Cleveland, but they made it look like a day in the middle of summer.

This was taken at Kyndall's home. When Kyndall's mom told me that she would provide the props, she wasn't kidding! The only thing I added was to digitally create a photo backdrop from her stuffed frog. Love this little girl - she's a natural model.

Mayah entered the world! She was also my first newborn session. The one thing I learned about newborn sessions -- go with the flow. My plan will not necessarily be hers -- and there's noooooo directing a newborn! :-)

Penelope and Sean's Engagement Session -- This was taken at the peak of tree blossoms at Wade Pond in University Circle . I really wanted to get a session in here, so I called Penelope and asked if they would be interested (I was to be shooting their June wedding) -- so glad they were!

May 2010

Eleanor turned 100! In this photo she shows off her dexterity. She's got my dexterity beat. Great for her....sad for me! :-) Her wonderful and loving family celebrated at Breckenridge Village in Willoughby.

Sarah and Kevin get married! Sarah's veil and Sarah's face. Enough said :-) It's definitely a moment.

Brandy's High School Senior Photo Session. This may be my favorite senior pic of 2010. It was a dreary, drizzly day, but she was a trooper and forged ahead with the session. I'm so so glad she did. It gave me the ability to take this beautiful beautiful umbrella shot.

Michele and Nick get married! Dad stopped by just Michelle was getting ready to walk down the aisle. They hugged. As he watched her walk away, he was overcome for a moment and said out loud, "Wow." She turned to look at him.

Christine and Kevin's Engagement Session. Christine and Kevin were the winners of the St. Clarence Silent Auction -- at which I donated an engagement session and wedding. First of all -- sweet, nice and kind cannot even begin to describe this lovely couple. I am so looking forward to their May wedding this year! This photo was taken at Voinovich Park.

Rosemary and Josh Get Married! Fun, bubbly, vivacious Rosemary and suave, mischievous Josh. This couple truly had FUN at their wedding -- I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. What I loved most about them was how natural they were in front of the camera - it was as if I didn't even exist. They were THAT into each other.

Penelope and Sean Get Married! I love everything about this limo photo - the colors, the reflection off the mirrored ceiling, the angle of her body as she leans into him and the peek at the guests outside the tinted windows.

Melinda and Joe Get Married! Hands down my favorite wedding silhouette this year. I was glad to capture this for them -- they were such a great couple, and I was so impressed with how close they were to their family and friends. Their wedding overflowed with love from so many perspectives.

Megan and Josh get married! 1-8-11

I had the wonderful pleasure of photographing Megan and Josh's wedding on a wintery, snow covered day at Tom's Country Place in Avon, Ohio. I've never met them other than through email, so it was wonderful to finally put their faces to their names. Megan was a vision of loveliness in her full (pocketed!) wedding gown and gorgeous vintage-like headpiece. It was heartwarming to see the love they shared. Here are some photos of their day...

Megan and Josh chose to take their portraits before their ceremony - we had the run of a large room separate from where the ceremony/reception was to take place. I replaced the wall mirrors with additional portraits for this creative collage.

Megan - the joy and look of expectation on her face - it's the kind of look that just cannot be emulated. It's pure happy.

Just a touch of ring malfunction - Josh did manage to wiggle it on the rest of the way!

Before the wedding, the weather forecast that several inches of snow could fall to the ground -- this made Josh and Megan just a bit nervous because many of their guests work for the same landscaping company - which means they would have to leave to plow snow if that happened! Luckily, the weather forecasters were wrong and they enjoyed a full house (there were about a half dozen snow plows in the parking lot, though!)

This....this is the look of love.

Their theme was Ohio State -- the guests received "buckeyes" for their favors - and in addition to the beautiful red and white cake, they offered an Ohio State themed cake!

I met with Karmyce and family at Tower City. It was a perfect day to be inside at the mall -- it wasn't too crowded and the decorations were beautiful.

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of photographing Jessica and Les' wedding. Sure, it was a typical Cleveland November day - chilly and overcast, but that didn't make a dent in the spirit and happiness of those there to celebrate their special day! Jessica is warm and genuine and loved to laugh. Les was laid back and seemed to love to put a smile on Jessica's face, so they are perfectly suited to each other! In summary -- humor, laughter and love were the key emotions of the day. :-)

I always have fun when I photograph David and Nicole and their two beautiful girls, Aleah and Mayah -- it's so amazing to see how fast children grow within just a few months! Aleah was a ball of energy and Mayah is such a happy baby! We went to Shaker Lakes in Shaker Heights, a truly beautiful location.

I love this picture -- getting the whole family to look at me at the same time can be really challenging, especially with little ones. That said...some of the "out takes" are precious. I love the moment David and Mayah are having with each other!

Delmont - Senior Pictures

I love going to Shoepfle Gardens in the Fall, and today was no exception! I met with Delmont for his senior portrait session today -- such a nice guy -- his mom scheduled this appointment months ago and anyone that lives in Cleveland area knows that having a semi warm, day of sunshine (on a Saturday no less) in October is beyond lucky. That's what we had -- and the colors were gorgeous. Here are some of the photos from today...

Delmont's mom and dad were present during this session. They were so friendly and the conversation flowed easily -- they also helped carry my second camera and bag (thank you!) Their pride and love for their son was very apparent, so I wanted to include them in one of his photos -- I decided on a creative family portrait ;-)

Heather and Brian's Wedding - 9/25/10

Heather and Brian were married at the Bay Village Gazebo on Saturday. The weather was chilly and overcast all day, however, just before their ceremony at 6:00 p.m., the sky cleared and the sun came out as bright as I've ever seen it! How would I describe Heather and Brian? They are probably the sweetest, nicest and most genuine couple I've ever met. They have a special story, and their love for each other (and the love their guests had for them) was touching. Some of their story....

They were married by the Mayor of Bay Village in this gorgeous gazebo, located very near to the lake.

And the ceremony ends with a beautiful lens flare from the sun -- a blessing.

Sunset happens in Cleveland at around 7:30 now...we had a quick thirty minutes to take advantage of whatever light was left. This next picture has to be one of my very favorites. It was very very chilly and windy, but Heather never let it show -- and it resulted in gorgeous beach photos....

Sometimes it's not about the business...

Sometimes it about the relationships created along the way. This story is about one of those wonderful unexpected relationships. This story is not about a bride who hired me. It is about a bride who didn't hire me, yet became a friend in the process.

When Melissa "friended" me on Facebook back in February, she did so because she heard about me from a mutual friend. She was getting married in August and wanted to meet with me to talk about her wedding. We met and talked -- she viewed my work -- and we talked some more. She was sweet and genuine and I enjoyed getting to know her and hearing her story.

As it turns out, she hired another photographer for her wedding. It happens. I didn't take it personally and wished her well. Over the months, as my Facebook friend, I had gotten to know her better through her status updates and often laughed at some of her quirkier posts, as well as "awwwwwed" over her very sweet posts about her love for Dale and her children. She had gotten to know me as well. She commented often on my updates, which I really appreciated. it was nice to know that even though she wasn't a client, she was becoming a friend.

I did attend Melissa and Dale's wedding, but not as their photographer -- I attended as their guest! I was thrilled to be there and really wanted to capture, in photographs, the Melissa I got to know over the months. My challenge, of course, was to be the guest. I brought one camera - one lens - one memory card. Okay, so my long lens probably gave me away since Tony Wencil of First Glance Photography (http://firstglancephoto.weebly.com/) - the photographer Melissa hired approached me and said, "I see you brought your heavy artillery with you!" I introduced myself we got to chatting. He's a really nice guy and told me that I could have free reign. I knew that if I took him up on that generous offer, that I would turn into photographer-maria, so I stuck with my back-seat-plan. I convinced myself that if I stayed in my back-row seat, that I would remember my role as a guest. I did pretty good. I got up just once for a quick couple shots, but (as she rationalizes) I stayed in the back behind all the guests.

The wedding? It was as beautiful and emotional as I knew it would be. Melissa and Dale were a gorgeous bride and groom. I was so pleased to be a guest and to see first hand how the story of the rest of their lives truly begins.

This was such a touching moment. Melissa was a vision of joy as she waves to Dale. Her dad struggles to keep it together. He did and although he didn't want to let her hand go at the end of the aisle, the smile on his face couldn't have been bigger!

Ashley and Justin's Wedding! 9-4-10

Ashley and Justin were married this past Saturday at the beautiful Milan Villa. What a beautiful couple - they were so kind and gracious - emotional - and fun! Their families were wonderful as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and and honored that they chose me to photograph their wedding. On to their story (click individual photos to see the enlarged versions).

The day started with Ashley fretting slightly that the weather was going to turn for the worse...but her family assured her that it would be just fine (and it was!)

As the crown is placed on Ashley's head, she doesn't notice that her mom (Cindy) is having a moment and "Honey" (Grandma) gives her a comforting kiss...

No time to waste! As her hair is being styled, Ashley puts on her makeup.

There was so much symbolism in this wedding - all with much meaning. Ashley's "something old" was the lace from her mother's wedding veil, to which her mom is sewing on a tiny butterfly. I asked Ashley what the butterfly meant. She said, "my mom always called us her beautiful butterflies."

Rachel and Brandon -- Again!

Remember Rachel and Brandon? They were the bride and groom that were married on July 24th in Lake Chautauqua - during torrential rain and a tornado which thwarted their plans of beautiful vineyard wedding photos and knocked out the power (including air conditioning!) at their reception. And while the wedding and reception was an amazing experience, with positive attitudes and happiness that wouldn't be dampened, I felt badly that they couldn't have the vineyard portraits that they dreamed of. As they were honeymooning in Sedona, Arizona, I wrote them an email offering to photograph them at a vineyard in Ohio when they returned. So that we did -- Geneva, Ohio offers a plethora of gorgeous vineyards. Rachel and Brandon were real troopers on their wedding day and I'm so glad that I was able to give them this gift.

I met with Bethany and Ed on Sunday to photograph their engagement session at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus, Ohio. It was an interesting sort of misty, sort of foggy kind of day, which actually worked quite well for their pictures and kept the heat at bay for at least a little while! What a nice nice couple -- I really enjoyed spending time with them and getting to know them better! As for the location -- wow -- I don't think I've ever seen such beautiful gardens with gorgeous structures and settings. It was the perfect outdoor studio!!! Amanda and George Get Married! July 31, 2010

Amanda and George were married last Saturday on a sultry afternoon. Such a great, down-to-earth couple. They and there family were so warm and friendly and their friends were also fantastic. Let the story begin...

Amanda works at David Anthony Salon in Lorain. It was crowded with bridesmaids and family as well as co-workers who were happy to get Amanda ready for her big day!

So...George came up to me and asked if I would mind taking a picture of their hands with their wedding rings. The photo he requested isn't unusual - I do that all the time -- but what touched me was that he requested it. He said, "This is the first day I'm wearing my ring and I want to have a picture of it." (how sweet!). Later, when I asked for their rings for my "creative ring shot" he said, "I only just started wearing it and my finger feels naked without it!" (awww!)

I didn't keep it from him very long. Just long enough to take a photo of the rings in Amanda's bouquet.

Rachel and Brandon's Whirlwind Wedding! 7-24-10

What an experience and what a wedding! Rachel and Brandon were married last Saturday in the Lake Chautauqua region of New York. We went from morning sunshine to torrential rains and -yes - a tornado in the afternoon! This is going to be a long blog, but it's a wonderful story to tell! Rachel and Brandon really set the bar on "going with the flow." Here's their story...

The morning started out innocently enough. The guys met at the golf course to hit a few...the sun was bright and the weather, as it has been all summer, steamy.

Meanwhile, Rachel was at Panache Salon getting ready with the girls. Rachel has meticulously planned her wedding for over a year. She made many of her decorations following a wine/coffee theme. Honestly, I don't think I've ever met anyone as creative and thoughtful when it came to every detail of her day. So, when I saw a "Martha Stewart Weddings" magazine on her lap, I wasn't surprised -- she could be her clone!

Rachel had arranged for a gorgeous brunch with tasty finger foods...
Back at the hotel...a couple views of her gorgeous gown.
I love love love "bride getting ready" shots...the movement of all the helping hands...it's like poetry.

Dad sees Rachel in her dress for the first time, and tries to contain his emotion...
They selected Quincy Cellars as their ceremony location. The trees were gorgeous and provided a nice cool(ish) shade for the guests...
Meanwhile, Rachel and the girls are by the vineyard preparing to walk down the aisle!
The moment is here....and Rachel is a vision of joy...

Thunder began rolling in the distance about halfway through the ceremony...which increased as the ceremony continued. The wind began to whip Rachel's veil around just before the rain...
And rain it did! It didn't drizzle...it came in a sudden downpour. Everyone rushed inside the barn.
And we continued without a hitch inside...
Rachel's mom had the voice of an angel as she serenaded the bride and groom...
As part of the ceremony, Rachel and Brandon planned to combine the soil of each parents' yard into the soil of a young pine tree that they will grow in their own yard. The wind and rain knock over a glass of soil. One of the guests calmly scooped up the soil and placed it into another glass...
just in time for Rachel and Brandon to plant their tree...
After the ceremony, it took a while for the barn to clear out since the rain was so heavy. Gone were the hopes of getting beautiful vineyard bridal portraits -- but we did get some really great photos inside the barn. Here is another one of Rachel's wonderfully unique ideas. Rather than jackets on this hot July day, she had the groomsmen dress in suspenders. Brandon was the only person with a jacket that day. The weather was so hot and humid, that I'm sure the guys appreciated it -- and they looked great!

so....while we were taking photos inside the barn and waiting for the rain to let up a little so we could head to the hotel for the reception, someone received a call that a tornado touched down just blocks from the hotel and that roads were closed -- we were detoured, but eventually made it to the hotel...

I had taken a few photos of the decor before the ceremony -- I'm glad I did, because when we arrived, we discovered that all the power at the hotel was out! This meant no air conditioning - no lights - no DJ? The hotel did have a generator that was able to light one strand of lights and to power the DJ. Their planned plated dinner had to become a buffet. Extra candles were placed on the tables. The DJ did get a round of applause when he announced that after the buffet was served, they would be able to power up some fans!

For a while, there was some additional light provided by the open door in the back... this photo was taken with a tripod and longer shutter speed -- in reality, it was much darker than this!
And yet...it mattered very little. Rachel, Brandon, their friends and family were there to celebrate and they did!
How dark was it? It was so dark that Rachel had to hold a candle close to the toast that Brandon had written in Rachel's honor so that he could read it!

Honestly? There were more people on that dance floor - in this place without air conditioning - than many other weddings that I have photographed. They didn't let a little heat and humidity get to them. They danced...and danced...and danced....all night long!

How hot was it? It was THIS hot!!!
At around 11:15 p.m. the power came back on to a loud round of applause. Here, the bridal party takes a break to go outside and smoke some cigars...
The last dance.... the emotion between Rachel and Brandon was palpable. The dance floor was still full. In fact...they carried on the party at another location when this one closed down!

I am just so impressed and amazed by the course of events on this day. I am more impressed and even a bit awed by how well everyone handled it. I attribute this to Rachel and Brandon's evident joy which was infectious. It mattered not that her meticulous planning had been thwarted by a tornado...what mattered was that they were married on this day, and for that they were so happy. This has to be one of the best and most rewarding weddings I have ever photographed!

Jen and Scott's "Excellent" Adventure! (Engagement Session)

It was a whole lot of fun spending time with Jen and Scott on Saturday -- We met at Huntington Beach in Bay Village on what had to be the most crowded day of the year. This means we had to be a little creative in finding places to photograph -- I went to areas of that beach I didn't know existed and thus, our excellent adventure! We "rock climbed", we crossed creeks barefoot, we endured bug swarms, and walked for miles and miles (okay not that far, but it was a nice little hike!). By the time we got back to the main part of the beach, the crowds thinned and we captured a wonderful sunset! The best part, for me, was getting to know Jen and Scott who are so engaging and friendly that by the time we were done, I felt as if I had known them forever. I'm looking forward to their wedding in October of 2011! (click on individual photos to see larger versions)

We are still waiting for the crowd to thin, so we take some photos in one of the very few unoccupied areas across the street.

To the left of this area of Hungtington Beach, it was still very crowded, so we decided to head right...

I'm disappointed that Scott and Jen don't look like they are up higher. Because I swear when we were there in the moment, it was such a challenge! :-) This was the trickiest part of our adventure -- we passed a guy on the beach who promised us that there was a path up ahead that would lead to another part of the beach. What we didn't know was that we were going to have to climb up a steep incline where the only way to get to the path was to grab onto rocks, hoist yourself up and pray, haha! It may only have been a six foot effort, but intimidating nonetheless. Jen is holding on to one of my cameras and Scott is waiting for me to give him my other camera...

We made it! Here are a couple photos of the "other side"

When we returned to the beach that I know, we had a little more space and a beautiful sunset!

Melinda was asked if she thought she would cry. She didn't think so, she said. She held it together pretty well...but she did have a moment walking down the aisle when her emotion broke through her composure...

A special dance -- it seemed as if the entire guest list was on the dance floor at this time -- they circled Mindy and Joe and on the DJ's word, they closed in -- Here they are anticipating the surge! :-)

Christine and Kevin - Engagement Session

I had a great time with Christine and Kevin today for their engagement session. This sweet couple was the winning bid for the wedding I donated to the St. Clarence silent auction back in February. I think I also won, because they are such a genuinely nice couple! It was really nice getting to know them today and I'm looking forward to their 2011 wedding. Michelle and Nick - Wedding of 5/22/10

I had a great time photographing Michelle and Nick's wedding last Saturday. Despite some ominous weather threatening the plans for an outdoor wedding, the weather held out (barely!). I have to say that Michelle and Nick had such a great group of family and friends - it was really a pleasure spending time with them.

Their ceremony and reception was held at Michaud's in Strongsville - and I was so impressed with both the beautiful grounds outside and the wonderful staff.

Dad stopped by just Michelle was getting ready to walk down the aisle. They hugged. As he watched her walk away, he was overcome for a moment and said out loud, "Wow." She turned to look at him.

One of the customs they incorporated into their reception was the Filipino money dance. Money was placed into the grooms teeth, who then passed it to his bride to receive. This was so incredibly funny at times -- and definitely a money dance I won't forget!!...

Brandy - Senior Portraits

Brandy and I met up at Lakeview Beach in Lorain to take her senior portraits. It was a bit dreary outside and, at times, drizzling rain -- but Brandy was a great sport about it and we forged ahead with the session. Even though I'm not a fan of dreary, it did give me an opportunity to incorporate an umbrella into a picture :-). Brandy was great to work with - I enjoyed spending time with her today.
